Classwork 1

Before, I thought a collection should only be in one colour by using differnet itensity to make it harmonic and cohesive. After the lecture, i discovered that using different hues in one collection is essential as we need to draw the attention from others.
For my collection, most of it use a contrast of colour. Although I have used several hues, this collection is still in a balance of colour as the intensity of them are similar. Instead of adding pattern, all of my collection are plain in colour to give a feeling of clean.

History of Christian Dior_John Galliano

.....................................................................................................................
Other than Christian Dior, John Galiano must be a big wheel in the development of the brand as he almost upstages the sensational creations he dreams up for the House of Dior. His inspiration often from comes from the world travel, and he will turn such inspiration into a brand-new style. Because of his exaggerated design, many people thought his style may not suited Dior's own style when he became the design directior of Christian Dior in 1997.
In summer/spring 1997, Galliano mix Christian Dior's style with African culture and create a collection with glamor and dainty details, but still obviouly show Dior's own style. This collection
show that he can mix his exaggerated style with Dior's fashion without destorying it.

As Galliano's style must be the major factor that affect the use of colour for the fall winter collection 2010. So I will further analyse John Galliano's past collection in depth.

History of Christian Dior 2

In 1957, Dior died of a heart attack. The French newspaper Le Monde hailed him as a man who was identified with good taste, the art of living and refined culture that epitomises. Not only the New Look, the cutting methods created by Christian Dior still seriouly affect the fashion industry nowadays. Those cutting methods included the "A" line, the "H" line and the "Y" line.

Afterward, Dior's 21-year-old assistant, Saint Laurent, was left to "save fashion," Saint Laurent's own first collection, the controversial Trapeze show. This collection's clothes were as meticulously made and perfectly proportioned as Dior's in the same exquisite fabrics, but their young designer made them softer, lighter and easier to wear.It made waves almost as stormy as those of the New Look.
Besides Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferréhas kept to run the brand and make it more successful—the registers ringing with sales of It accessories. In 1997, John Galliano became crowned design director at Christian Dior. As in the nearest century, Galliano made Christian Dior different from before by adding him own charatiristic into the brand. I will further talk about him influence on Christian Dior in the next post.

History of Christian Dior

Christian Dior (January 21, 1905-October 24, 1957), was an influential French fashion designer. He was born in Granville, Manche, Normandy, France.

In the 1930's Dior made a living by selling sketches to Parisian couture houses and doing illustrations for the fashion pages of Le Figaro.
In 1945 he designed for Marcel Boussac, Dior's talent was recognized by Marcel Boussac as he is interested in Diors new idea that involved using lots of layers of extravagant fabrics. Boussac financed him to start him own conture house in 1946.Dior's first collection, Corolle Line, premiered in 1947. He established his main fashion house in 1949; Christian Dior New York Inc

Dior first collection-Corolle Line
Dior's first collection, was a shot heard round the world and probably the most famous single season in style history. The look was refreshing and much more voluptuous then the boxy shapes of the recent World War 2 styles. Its idea was to brush away bad memories of wartime fabric rationing with a sweep of crinolines—featured sloping shoulders, full busts and cinched-in waists above full and long skirts. The tiny waist is emphasised by the padded hips of the skirt. It's voluminous as it's heavy and with many layers. This look was an international sensation.

This was a backwards step for emancipation for women, because of the shape

At first there was some backlash to Dior's genius form because of the amount of fabrics used in a single dress or suit but as soon as the War Time Shortages came to an end, opposition ceased.
This collection marked a signficant success for Christian Dior.

During the 1950's, Dior had almost single-handedly restored Paris as the capital of the fashion world. He then went on to revolutionize the fashion industry. With his partner, Ava Gardner, Marlene Dietrich, Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Windsor. They realized that the future was in an international market and diverse products, so they opened a fur subsidiary, a ready to wear outlet and the first Christian Dior perfume, Miss Dior.
